BC Government Initiative

Protecting Sensitive Environmental Data with Secure, Role-Aware Access

The BioHub Platform was built to help users discover environmental data and securely request access to sensitive records through a centralized, role-aware portal.

Results

Outcomes from the engagement

25%

Faster Feature Delivery

Faster shipping improved validation velocity and customer feedback loops while protecting runway.

100%

Traceable Data Access Requests

Stronger traceability reduced compliance risk and lowered the cost of governance as the product scaled.

Lower Ops

Secure Self-Serve Flows

The team spent less time on repetitive coordination and more time on growth priorities.

Context

A BC Government initiative requiring secure data access at scale

ClientFirst Labs partnered with Button Inc on the delivery of BioHub, a BC Government initiative focused on protecting sensitive environmental records while enabling responsible access. The platform had to support public discovery, authenticated request workflows, and strict role-based controls in one centralized product experience.

Challenge

Increase delivery speed while preserving security and governance

  • - User journeys were fragmented between search, feature details, submissions, and access requests
  • - Authorization logic had to enforce team, policy, and system-user rules across multiple endpoints
  • - Stakeholders needed complete request traceability for governance, audit readiness, and operational follow-up
  • - Portal capabilities were missing for users to track submission and ticket status
  • - API and frontend consistency needed to improve as security-sensitive scope expanded

Our approach

Security-first delivery

Our team operated as an extension of the delivery function, shipping in test-backed increments while keeping environmental data protection, traceability, and workflow clarity as non-negotiable requirements. We prioritized implementation decisions that strengthened both user experience and governance outcomes.

An effective user portal

We launched clear portal pages where users can see their submissions and tickets in one place, with straightforward status visibility and fewer support questions.

Strong access controls for sensitive data

We tightened who can see and do what across the platform so sensitive records stay protected and teams can operate with clearer permission boundaries.

Fully trackable data requests

Each access request now connects to an operational ticket, giving the team a complete trail from submission to follow-up for governance and compliance reviews.

Faster and more reliable user journeys

We improved the highest-traffic pages so users can find data, understand secure record rules, and complete request flows with fewer dead ends and less confusion.

Results

What changed after delivery

The initiative gained stronger security operations without slowing delivery. Users could discover environmental data and move through secure access requests with clearer workflows, while the team gained complete request traceability from submission to ticket follow-up.

The delivery team also improved consistency across routing and API behavior, and increased release confidence through broader test coverage in critical security-sensitive flows.

Founder takeaway

Why this engagement model worked

This engagement worked because ClientFirst Labs combined rapid execution with governance-aware engineering decisions from the start. We treated security controls, traceability, and user workflow quality as core product requirements, not post-launch fixes. For founders in regulated or security-sensitive domains, this approach protects trust while maintaining delivery momentum.

"ClientFirst Labs was an exceptional contributor to our development team. They integrated seamlessly into the team's dynamic and consistently delivered high-quality features, often anticipating upcoming needs before they were formally defined. They made meaningful improvements across the entire codebase, contributing to both frontend and API development. Beyond delivery, they demonstrated a clear commitment to deepening his technical expertise. Any future team will benefit from their capability, initiative, and thoughtful approach to software development."
